Heke Homemade Herbals was started in 2015, by Emma Heke. This unique tea brand is one of New Zealand's only, true "Ground to cup" tea producers. It all started out by using her home grown herbs, to make tea for her guests and for gifts. It didn't take long to realize that her backyard crops couldn't keep up with demand. So along with growing at home, the other herbs are sourced form organic growers, mostly from New Zealand, with some herbs that cant be grown here being imported. She does as much of the processing herself. Drying and blending these ingredients, creating over 60 different teas so far. All the blends are crafted with flavour and Wellness factor in mind. It takes a lot of time and effort to get these right. With research into the health benefits of each herb and then seeing what works together. It's uncommon and awesome to see, someone taking on all these processing challenges. You can find her at the Nelson market. With a wide array of sniffing jars, you can discover all the amazing aromas and colours of these unique blends. Emma has won a Silver Medal at the 2019 Outstanding NZ Food Producers awards and been runner up for a sustainability award for the packaging that's eco friendly by being home-compostable. It would be nice to see more brands follow in Emmas footsteps.
We’ve chosen the “Black Rose” tea for this month. A delightful twist on the typical "Gumboot" black tea. It a blend of black tea, combined with the subtle flavours of rose petals, coconut flakes and calendula flowers. It’s full of flavour because of the freshness of the ingredients. Perfect as a daily brewer for the black tea enthusiast.
